The inaugural TIF Fellowship for Haemoglobinopathy Nurses took place from 12 to 14 October 2026 at the Thalassaemia Unit, Centre of Expertise in Rare Haematologic Diseases, Laiko General Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Programme Structure
The 2026 Fellowship consisted of a three-day training programme, which took place from 12–14 October, at the Thalassaemia Unit, Centre of Expertise in Rare Haematologic Diseases, Laiko General Hospital, Athens, Greece.
In its inaugural year, the programme was delivered in Greek and accommodated a total of two (2) participating nurses.
Participants benefited from direct clinical exposure, case-based learning, and mentorship from experienced specialists involved in the comprehensive, multidisciplinary care of patients with haemoglobinopathies.
Our Specialists
The Fellowship was conducted under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Maria Dimopoulou and Ms. Elpida Georgiadi.
Maria Dimopoulou graduated and completed her training in Hematology and her PhD at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, at the LAIKO General Hospital of Athens. She specialized in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation at Royal Free Hospital, London, UK.
Ms. Elpida Georgiadi graduated from the Nursing Department of Athens University of Applied Sciences (TEI of Athens) and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She also holds a Master’s degree in Intensive Care and Emergency Nursing.
Participants and Eligibility
Two nurses took part in the inaugural programme:
- Ms Eleni Volakli, from the unit at Kavala Hospital.
- Ms Viktoria Triantafyllou, from the unit at Agios Andreas Hospital, Patras.
Eligibility for the 2026 intake required applicants to:
– Be registered nurses in public healthcare institutions in Greece, with at least two years of clinical experience caring for people with haemoglobinopathies.
– Commit to continuing in haemoglobinopathy care and sharing what they learned with colleagues and professional networks.

Applications were required to include the following documents:
- A comprehensive, up-to-date CV.
- A letter of support and recommendation from the candidate’s current employer(s), on official letterhead.
- Two letters confirming a commitment to work in haemoglobinopathy care for at least two years: one signed by the candidate and one by the employing institution’s director or an authorised Ministry of Health representative in the country of employment.
Selection Process
The 2026 selection framework allowed TIF and the training centre to consult and agree.
Fellowship Support
The Fellowship provided financial support to facilitate the participation of the selected candidates during the training period.
