Sickle Cell Pain Crisis: Clinical Guidelines for the Use of Oxygen
Omoigui, S. Practical Pain Management. (2020)
Nocturnal hypoxemia is a prelude to vaso‐occlusive crisis (VOC). Vascular occlusion and disruption of tissue oxygenation are a prequel to excruciating pain, chest splinting with further hypoxemia, acute chest syndrome, hemolysis, distal tissue ischemia, ischemia-reperfusion injury, concomitant inflammation, resulting in organ damage and other complications with increased morbidity and mortality.
Oxygen therapy is a simple yet cost-effective way to prevent VOC and its attendant morbidity and mortality.
