Post Graduate Institute Child Health (PGICH) Fellowship
The TIF–PGICH Thalassaemia Fellowship, developed in collaboration with the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), is a short-term training programme focused on the comprehensive management of thalassaemia and other haemoglobin disorders in India. It is hosted at the Department of Paediatric Haematology, Post Graduate Institute of Child Health (PGICH), Noida, a recognized TIF Collaborating Centre that offers clinical exposure and academic learning in a multidisciplinary setting aligned with international standards.
PGICH, established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, provides specialised paediatric care, postgraduate education, and research, making it an ideal environment for this fellowship.
The programme is particularly relevant in India, where thalassaemia remains a major public health challenge. With a 3–4% carrier frequency and thousands of affected births annually, patients require lifelong, structured care, including regular transfusions and iron chelation. Given the country’s population diversity and ongoing gaps in screening coverage, there is a clear need for strengthened expertise in prevention and care, needs that this fellowship aims to address.
Purpose and Objectives
The TIF-PGICH Thalassaemia Fellowship aims to provide early-career physicians from India with structured clinical exposure and specialised training in the comprehensive care of patients with haemoglobinopathies.
The programme seeks to:
- Strengthen clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of thalassaemia and sickle cell disease
- Promote a multidisciplinary model of care integrating haematology, cardiology, endocrinology, hepatology, nephrology, neurology, and mental health services
- Enhance participants’ capacity to recognise and manage disease-related complications, including iron overload and its systemic effects
- Support the decentralisation of specialised knowledge by empowering trained physicians to transfer expertise to their local healthcare settings
- Foster collaboration and knowledge exchange within the global haemoglobinopathy community
Through immersive clinical training and interaction with experienced specialists, fellows gain practical insight into evidence-based clinical practice and multidisciplinary patient care.
