The Hidden Dangers of Sickle Cell Trait: Unraveling the Risk for Complications

Worldwide, it is estimated that there are 300 million people with sickle cell trait and one-third of this number are in sub-Saharan Africa. With these staggering figures, sickle cell disease (SCD) remains one of the world’s most common monogenetic disorders.
Unfortunately, limited information is known on patients with sickle cell trait in terms of their risk for numerous clinical complications. Extreme exertional injury, chronic kidney disease, and problems during pregnancy and surgery are all examples of conditions that hat aren’t usually seen in other carrier states.
According to the authors of a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, improving awareness of these clinical symptoms, as well as their prevention and management, might be a valuable tool for all healthcare practitioners involved in this problem.
