Managing Heart Health in Hemoglobinopathy Patients
Cardiac complications are a significant concern for patients with haemoglobinopathies, often leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality. However, advancements in regular therapies and diligent follow-up care have notably decreased the incidence of heart disease caused by severe anaemia or iron overload within these patient groups.
The range of cardiovascular issues linked to haemoglobinopathies is broad, encompassing ventricular dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, pericarditis-myocarditis, arrhythmias, strokes, and thromboembolic events. Despite these challenges, the potential for early detection and effective treatment is promising.
Current diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, combined with an improved understanding of the disease’s pathophysiology, offer pathways to manage and treat heart disease effectively. This underscores the importance of continuous medical innovation and patient education in combating heart-related complications associated with haemoglobinopathies.
More about the Pan American Network for Haemoglobin Disorders (PANHD)
A close-up of a vintage globe showing the Americas.
The Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) has made a pivotal move to enhance the care and awareness of haemoglobin disorders in the Americas by launching the Pan American Network for Haemoglobin Disorders (PANHD).
This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive and unified platform that links patient associations, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders across the continent. By encouraging collaboration and enabling the sharing of knowledge and resources, the network aspires to improve the quality of care and support for individuals affected by these rare blood disorders.
