Each year, on 14 June, the world comes together to celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) — a day dedicated to raising awareness of the vital need for safe, sufficient, and accessible blood and blood products, and to express heartfelt gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors whose selfless acts save millions of lives annually.

WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY 2025 | Give Blood, Give Hope – Together We Save Lives

In 2025, the campaign theme “Give blood, give hope – Together we save lives” highlights how blood donation is not only a simple act of kindness, but a powerful expression of human solidarity that brings hope and healing to those in urgent need. By giving blood regularly, each of us contributes to building a healthier, more equitable and compassionate world.
💉 Why Regular Blood Donation Matters – Especially for People with Thalassaemia and Haemoglobinopathies
For individuals living with thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, and other chronic conditions that require lifelong regular blood transfusions, blood donors are not just heroes — they are lifelines.
Patients with transfusion-dependent thalassaemia often require blood every 2–4 weeks to survive and live healthy, productive lives. The availability of safe, adequately screened, and timely blood is essential to prevent severe complications, reduce morbidity, and ensure quality of life. Without a consistent supply of donated blood, their treatment is compromised, and their lives are at serious risk.
A stable base of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors, committed to donating regularly, is the cornerstone of a safe and sustainable blood supply for these patients. By giving blood, donors are not only saving lives but also giving hope to thousands of families affected by such lifelong medical conditions.
🎯 Campaign Objectives
The World Health Organization (WHO), together with its partners, has outlined the following key objectives for WBDD 2025:
- Celebrate and thank individuals who donate blood and encourage more people to become regular, voluntary donors.
- Promote the values of voluntary, unpaid blood donation as acts of solidarity and altruism that build community resilience and social cohesion.
- Raise awareness of the urgent need for regular blood donation to ensure availability and universal access to safe blood transfusion.
- Strengthen blood donor programmes through investment, innovation, education, and partnerships, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
- Engage youth and communities to foster a culture of voluntary blood donation for a sustainable future.

📣 TIF Campaign Highlights
As part of our ongoing commitment to advocate for the needs of people with thalassaemia and similar conditions, the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) is proud to support World Blood Donor Day 2025.
To amplify this year’s message, TIF has prepared a series of eye-catching visuals and a powerful set of “Blood Donation Myth-Busters”, which will be launched soon across our digital platforms. These resources aim to educate the public, dispel common myths, and motivate more individuals — especially young people — to become lifelong blood donors.
Stay tuned and help us spread the word:
Together, we give blood. Together, we give hope. Together, we save lives.
