Guangzhou First People’s Hospital, China
Department of Haematology, Nansha Branch

The Department of Haematology at the Nansha Branch of Guangzhou First People’s Hospital, China, is part of one of Guangdong Province’s leading Class III Grade A hospitals, founded in 1899, with a long-standing reputation in clinical care, teaching, and research. The Department serves as a provincial training base for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) from matched related, matched unrelated, and haploidentical donors, and is recognised as one of the largest HSCT centres in Guangdong Province.
While the Department does not operate a dedicated thalassaemia unit for regular treatment and follow-up, it has developed outstanding expertise in allogeneic HSCT and gene therapy for transfusion-dependent thalassaemia, having established what the evaluators describe as probably the greatest single-centre experience worldwide in this field.
In view of its uniquely high level of activity, strong clinical expertise, and potential contribution to education and research, the Department has been recommended for designation as a TIF Collaborating Centre for Gene Therapy.
The TIF experts’ on-site assessment of the Department was conducted on 20 March 2026.
