EU Health Policy Course

Introduction:
Awareness of EU health policies is essential for patients living in one of the 27 EU countries. This knowledge helps patients in exercising their rights, and actively participating in shaping their national healthcare landscape for the purpose of improving their health status and quality of life.
Aims and goals:
This course aims to provide an overview of the existing EU Health Policies, as an introduction to basic concepts that are directly related to the patient community.
Requirements for participation:
Anyone with a personal, professional or academic interest in health policies, especially people living with a haemoglobinopathy such as thalassaemia, sickle cell disease and other rare anaemias.
Contents:
The course consists of five units:
- Introduction to how the EU works.
- Unit 1 outlines the patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare.
- Unit 2 describes the journey of medicines from research and development to patients.
- Unit 3 provides a brief description of the EU’s readiness in combatting serious cross-border health threats.
- Unit 4 discusses cancer, tobacco, and the promotion of good health.
- Unit 5 provides an overview of policies on the availability and safety of blood within the EU.
At the end of each unit, there is a test of knowledge in order to help you consolidate the content that was covered, as well as to highlight important, useful points to remember.
