Mr. Abdel Basset Mohamed Merdas was born in the United Arab Emirates in Dubai in 1960, and holds a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration.
He worked for the Dubai Government from 1989 until 2006. He is one of the founders of the Emirates Thalassemia Society (ETS), and played a major role in the association as a volunteer, while he continues to support the ETS since its launch in 1997. He is the Vice Chairman of the Society’s Board until today.
He proposed the idea of the first UAE forum for Gulf and Arab Thalassemia Societies and working on supporting the patients socially for the first time. He had a significant contribution in making the decision of pre-marital medical examination mandatory in the UAE, as well as the in the inclusion of Thalassemia in the biology national school books in cooperation with the UAE Ministry of Education.
His role in the selection of the Emirates Thalassemia Society as a role model among the other thalassaemia associations in the world was instrumental. In addition, he received the Medal of UAE Pioneers 2015 from HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in recognition for his 25 years of serving the patients and the country. He is the winner of the Sharjah Award 2018 for Voluntary Work.
