Survival Without Complications Continues to Improve for β-Thalassaemia

New data from a large group of patients with thalassaemia major in Italy, born between 1970 and 1997 and followed through 2020, showed that survival rates continue to improve over time. Importantly, deaths due to heart disease declined significantly from the year 2000 onwards while no death from bone marrow transplantation was observed after the year 2010.

The analysis demonstrates that early and appropriate management of patients, continued research and collaboration between reference centres and adequate access to multidisciplinary care, ensures the continuous improvement in survival towards a normal life expectancy.
