Patients’ stories

TURNING WEAKNESS TO STRENGTH by Dr Narongdej Poonsombudloet

”My story is dedicated to my parents and everything they have done for me.

When I was 6 months old, my parents noticed I was very pale and not as playful as other children. I was then diagnosed with Thalassaemia Major. After my diagnosis, they did everything to help cure my condition.

At the time (1991) Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) was not well-known in Thailand, but my parents took a leap of faith and had me go through with it and it worked. Despite the following infections after the transplantation, my parents’ love and devotion saw me through those difficult times.

Their battle for my health resulted in my cure.

Now, it’s my turn to give back to the community. I work as a haematologist in the field of Thalassaemia, and dedicate all my efforts to individuals with thalassaemia in Thailand.

My heartfelt thanks to my parents who made me who I am today.”
