Dr Androulla Eleftheriou, TIF’s Executive Director, and Mrs Lily Cannon, TIF’s Deputy Director, attended two important policy discussions at the European Parliament on May 23, 2023.
The first, co-organized by the European Blood Alliance (EBA), focused on an open discussion with stakeholders from the public and private sector including professional societies, donor associations and patient organisations about the SoHO Regulation – currently under discussion at the European Parliament. The event was co-hosted by MEPs Dolors Monserrat and Nicolas Caesares Gonzalez.
In addition, Dr Eleftheriou, represented the patient perspective in a discussion hosted by MEPs Cristian Bușoi and Tomislav Sokol and held in partnership with the Blood And Beyond initiative.
The discussions focused on the merits of greater harmonization to safeguard the adequacy and safety of substances for human use including red blood cells (RBCs), but also highlighted the refinement of the proposed regulation to continue to encourage innovation to improve sustainability and resilience especially as a method of preparedness for future health emergencies.
