Blood is an indispensable component of health care. It contributes to saving millions of lives each year in both routine and emergency situations, and dramatically improves the life expectancy and quality of life of people with a variety of acute and chronic conditions.
Blood is also the lifeline of patients with thalassaemia and other haemoglobin disorders.
As patients who require regular transfusions as part of their clinical management, they have the right to expect that sufficient blood will be available to meet their needs and to receive the safest blood possible. However, this is not always the case. Many patients worldwide still die or suffer unnecessarily, because they do not have access to adequate or safe blood.
To ensure that everyone who needs transfusion has access to adequate and safe blood, all countries need voluntary, unpaid blood donors who give blood regularly. Blood donors, who embody the quintessence of heroism and solidarity, are recognised and honoured on June 14 by the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD), a global public health event led by the World Health Organization (WHO), that features a distinct theme every year.
TIF’s WBDD23 Global Campaign Contest
As an organization representing the global community of people with thalassaemia and protecting the rights of individuals with other haemoglobin disorders, such as sickle cell disease (IASG) and rare anaemias (RAIN), the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) is focusing for many years now on the improvement of the availability, adequacy and safety of blood supplies across the world. To this end, TIF engages in multiple activities and collaborates with important official stakeholders in the field of blood, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT), the European Blood Alliance (EBA), the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB), etc.
Planning ahead of World Blood Donor Day 2023 and leveraging the power of its community, TIF seeks to develop a campaign to complement and support this major event, with the aim to increase awareness of the importance of donating blood and create tangible impact by encouraging more individuals to adopt new, regular donation habits.
For this to become a reality, we need your help!
Get creative and join our contest for the TIF World Blood Donor Day Global Campaign 2023! Become an integral part of the campaign’s creation, by turning your ideas into inspiring and dynamic slogans and/or visual artwork (logos, graphics, etc.) to promote blood donation.
The top-3 entries, to be selected by an independent, TIF-appointed Committee, will be awarded cash prizes of $1000, $600, and $400, respectively.
