Mr Loris Angelo Brunetta

Mr Loris Angelo Brunetta born in Genova (Italy), is founding member of Comitato Ligure Giovani Thalassemici, created in 1983 (which since June 2000 has been renamed Associazione Ligure Thalassemici), and that constitutes amongst the founding associations of the Thalassaemia International Federation.

Elected as President of the Associazione Ligure Thalassemici for five consecutive terms since 2000 (in office until 2015), he leads the activities of the organization including organization of workshops and seminars on blood diseases, participation in congresses, conferences and workshops, creation of projects for fundraising, research and patient support purposes. On behalf of the Italian Foundation ‘Leonardo Giambrone’ has been responsible, since 2011, for relations with the Thalassaemia International Federation. He is also a collaborator of the Italian Foundation’s magazine “Progetto Guarigione”, and the spokesperson of Italian Associations of thalassemia in relations with the Italian Ministry of Health, on the topic of transfused patients’ rights where blood infections are concerned.

Having studied Social and Institutional Communication studies at the University of Genova graduating with a thesis entitled “Disease and discrimination: paths to communicate disability” as well as receiving a Master on Human Rights, Loris has since 2004 been engaged in activities regarding disability issues, participating in conferences, debates, television appearances on major national and local stations, publishing articles in the press.

He has actively participated in the activities of a project entitled ‘A bridge between Genova and Rabat’ for supporting thalassaemia-affected children in Rabat-Morocco and contributed to Guidelines for Sickle Cell in Pediatry with AIEOP (Italian Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology) as a reviewer in 2009. In addition, he has published in 2007 a book about the experience of thalassaemia as well as contributes frequently to ‘EX’, a monthly Italian magazine, published in Ravenna for thalassaemia and hemophilia patients. Loris in 2008 received the Paul Harris Fellow award by Rotary Club Genova Nord.

Serving on the Board of Directors of TIF, Loris has led numerous delegation visits to Morocco and has contributed immensely to the defining of TIF’s educational activities since his election in 2011.
