TIF spreads its wings to Mauritius!

A first-time joint activity for the Federation and the Thalassaemia Society of Mauritius!

The weekend of the 9th and 10th February 2019 was of special significance and symbolic value for TIF, as representatives of the Federation traveled for the first time to Mauritius with the aim to participate in the ‘International Conference on Thalassaemia and other Haemoglobinopathies’, organized by TIF in collaboration with the Thalassaemia Society of Mauritius.

Dr, Michael Angastiniotis, TIF’s Medical Advisor, together with Dr. Antonia Piga and Dr. Mohammed Naveed, Members of the International TIF Medical Advisory Board, actively participated in the two-day Conference, which covered substantial topics mainly pertinent to thalassaemia and sickle cell prevention, control and management. Lady Sarojini Jugnauth, Former First Lady of Mauritius, Mrs. Amrita Vayid, President of the Mauritian Thalassaemia Society, and Mrs. Janaki Soroo, Head of National Blood Transfusion Service & Assistant Director of Lab Services, also attended the Conference.

The Thalassemia Society of Mauritius is run fully by volunteers from all backgrounds and includes thalassemia patients, parents, doctors, laboratory technical personnel and other volunteers. Its main objectives are to educate patients and their families on the management of thalassaemia, create awareness among public and advocate for screening and counselling programmes, promote collaboration with national and international authorities operating in the field, and campaign for blood collection and provide equipment and medicines for under privileged patients.

This Society constitutes a TIF’s member since 2009, standing out for its vast activities and dynamic contribution to the welfare of patients with thalassaemia in the country.
