Panos Englezos Prize 2022

Presented annually on the occasion of the Graduation Ceremony of the UNIC Medical School, the Panos Englezos Prize recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of haematology in a scientific or public health area worldwide.

TIF’s President, Mr Panos Englezos, stated: ‘’I am delighted to present this Award to Alan R. Cohen, who has been a valued scientific advisor and collaborator of TIF for many years. He is an internationally acclaimed clinician, researcher, and educator who has been instrumental in driving pioneering research in the field of β-thalassaemia and iron overload since the 1980s and long beyond the borders of Philadelphia. The Federation is truly privileged to have Professor Cohen on its team.

The Award was received on behalf of Professor Cohen, who wasn’t able to attend the ceremony, by Dr Androulla Eleftheriou, TIF’s Executive Director.

The 8th Graduation Ceremony of the University of Nicosia Medical School took place at the UNIC Open Amphitheatre on Tuesday 28 June 2022. Among the invited guests were the Republic of Cyprus Minister of Health, Mr Michalis Hajdipantela, and representatives of medical councils, societies, and affiliated hospitals.

Professor Alan R. Cohen has served as Physician-in-Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and as Professor of Pediatrics, at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.  He has headed the Thalassemia Center in the Division of Hematology in his hospital. He is a member of the Thalassemia Clinical Research Network in the USA.

He is also the former Chair and current Member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, former Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Pediatrics (APB), and former President of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs.
