Cypriot Stella Kyriakides named EU Health Commissioner

Cypriot psychologist and politician to take over from Vytenis Andriukaitis on November 1

Stella Kyriakides has got the nod as EU Commissioner for Health, making her part of a strong female presence in the new structure of the next European Commission. Kyriakides, one of 13 women commissioners from 27, replaces outgoing Christos Stylianides as Cyprus’ commissioner in Brussels.

In a recent statement, Mrs Kyriakides said it was a great honor for her to be appointed Commissioner for Health by Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen, noting that the health sector is one area in which she has been involved for years and that it constitutes a sector of priority for the new European Commission, “so that we can truly achieve the highest levels of safety and health for European citizens”. Mrs Kyriakides added the challenges are many “because we have a society that is getting older. Complex and more expensive therapies are constantly needed, and we must take advantage of new technologies available. Working together can truly make a difference for the health of  every EU citizen”.

Who is who:

Stella Kyriakides worked in the Ministry of Health between 1976 and 2006 in the departament of Child and Adolescent psychiatry. She was elected deputy in the 2006 elections, representing Nicosia District for the conservative Cypriot party Democratic Rally, party she is vice-president since 2013. In 1999 was appointed president of the First Breast Cancer Movement in Cyprus and President of the National Committee on Cancer Strategy of the Council in 2016.

In addition to her parliamentary activities, Kyriakidou has been serving as the chairperson of the delegation of Cyprus to the Parliamentary Assembly since 2012. From 2016 until 2018, she chaired the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Regional Development. After the resignation of the Spanish Pedro Agramunt, she ran for the presidency of the PACE, winning the voting in the third round against the Lithuanian Emanuelis Zingeris.

Following the 2019 European electionsPresident Nicos Anastasiades nominated Kyriakides to become the country’s next European Commissioner.
