The National Council for Scientific Research of Lebanon (CNRS – L) in recent years has established the prestigious Research Excellence Award, as a means to acknowledge research excellence and innovation. Thus, in recognition of Prof. Ali Taher’s research to the national, regional and international scientific community, he was presented with this award during an official ceremony on 24 November 2016.
Prof. Taher is one of the closest scientific collaborators and advisors of the Thalassemia International Federation (TIF), and a pioneer in the field of thalassaemia in Lebanon and the Middle East. His work has had a pivotal role in shaping the history of thalassaemia at a global level through his scientific research, but also through his participation in the editorial teams of important publications such as ‘Guidelines for the Management of Transfusion Dependent Thalassaemia’ and ‘Guidelines for the Management of Non-Transfusion Dependent Thalassaemia’.
A distinguished member of the global thalassaemia family, we were honour to address the following statement:
CNRS-L* Research Excellence Award for 2016
Statement from the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) about Prof. Ali Taher
Nicosia, 24 November 2016
The Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) is very privileged to enjoy the collaboration, partnership, contribution and above all the friendship of a distinguished scientist, medical professional and human being – that of Prof. Ali Taher.
Prof. Taher’s life ethic, his approach to science and research, but above all his patient-orientated nature is universally admired and cherished by the global thalassaemia family.
He is the scientist, the medical doctor, the expert, the researcher that has single-handedly redefined the region which he calls home, in terms of the clinical management of this multi-organ, genetic disease, elevating the quality of research and subsequent scientific publications concerning thalassaemia and literally introducing clinical trials into this part of the world. Prof. Taher has indeed brought a real change in the Region and globally, and very importantly in the better understanding and management of thalassaemia major and intermedia.
His contribution to the history of the management of thalassaemia, in the region, but also worldwide, is immense through his contribution to international clinical trials and educational events, and he paved the way to a new era of thalassaemia management, making patients all over the world more optimistic and looking forward to better health and an improved quality of life. For TIF, Prof Taher has been a truly invaluable partner in the preparation and upgrading of its educational programme including publications e.g. Guidelines for the Clinical Management of Thalassaemia and events e.g. regional and international conferences.
For us, it is a great fortune and privilege to have met and worked alongside this incredible scientist, this medical specialist, this MAN.
